UCP's Doula Services are for expecting mothers in Hillsborough County who are high risk for problem pregnancies.

Designed to reduce infant mortality rates among these expectant mothers, doulas provide emotional, educational and physical support to expectant mothers, not only during pregnancy but continuing through labor, delivery and the postpartum period.

Doulas do not provide medical care or advice. Rather, they provide support and information on such topics as pre-natal care, breast feeding, mother-infant bonding and post-natal care.

Outcomes include:

• Increased number of post partum and well-child medical visits
• Greater willingness to be screened for post partum depression
• Improved mother and baby health outcomes
• Increased willingness to breast feed
• Greater utilization of and satisfaction with perinatal health services.
