The inspiration for Kelly McGillis’ character in Top Gun, Christine Fox is the Assistant Director for Policy and Analysis of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Prior to joining APL, she served as Acting Deputy Secretary of Defense from December 2013 to May 2014, making her the highest-ranking female official in history to serve in the Department of Defense. Ms. Fox is a three-time recipient of the Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal. She has also been awarded the Department of the Army’s Decoration for Distinguished Civilian Service.
Ms. Fox currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Board on Mathematical Sciences and their Applications (BMSA) at the National Research Council, and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
With nearly 6,000 staff at what is the nation’s largest University Affiliated Research Center, Johns Hopkins APL makes critical contributions to a wide variety of national and global technical and scientific challenges. As the Director of Policy and Analysis, Ms. Fox leads efforts to increase APL’s engagement on technical policy issues and directs research and analysis projects on behalf of the Department of Defense, the intelligence community, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and other federal agencies.

Horizon zero dawn anyone?
Hey Charlie! How is maverick?
She's basically the irl Charlie from Top Gun (even down to the hair)
well perhaps there is some ways for going back (to pre-internet technologies) after all. but it would require a very difficult to survive catastrophe. Mother nature: "Hold my beer"
Thanks to Big Tech America is now a surveillance state.
Autonomous AI is like virus research. Someone will make one, it will go rogue and be a technological pandemic.
Dilemmas are there definitely, more interesting is to see the different actions taken by different people/regions/organizations post-dilemma
I'm sorry but the connections she's making between semi autonomous driving and soldier or civilian are outrageous. That's a far stretch.
Wow! This lady has it going on. We need her to head-up a new branch of Underwriters Laboratory.
They be ready in less than two years… sure
Does anyone knows a recent case of a REAL not just ethical/unethical issues BUT an ethical/moral dilemma where a corporation or company had a hard choice to make thx in advance
Phase 2 couldn’t be more wrong idgaf if they kick the robots
lol
Thank you for sharing. =)
In 1996 telecom companies got precedence over taxpayers in deploying technology. Already we're seeing cancer, suicides and many other health problems caused by new technology.
Very well done.
AI, Artificial Intelligence, is artificial intelligence; it is not real or true intelligence. When we think that someone we are talking to is Artificial, we will not give our heart to them, or we will use these fake people to replace the duties, joy and responsibility parents, etc. need to be part of, and loneliness will increase; we will become cold in our relationships with others.
We are warned by our Creator in the Ten Commandments written in stone by His own finger, not to make images or anything …:
Deuteronomy 5:6 I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
7 Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,
10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
Excellent!
just like with "guns" and "abortions" these are all individual decisions.
elon musk, did take on the responsibility of insuring the tesla vehicle….
he began insurance for only tesla owners.
as long as he doesnt kill us in the morning. itll be like chuky. technology…. wow… I would love to have a tesla.
They could have just saved and released through a different venue and included the hack photo as the introduction.
Could we still have action , motivation and intent in the way of a current murder? if this IT murdered someone, who would be at fault the owner or the maker of the technology?
Even when it can discriminate and acknowledge? even so, what if someone sticks a virus and or malware in it…..
Her understanding of ethics is flawed, because it's based on scenarios, rather than virtue. She basically tells us that we have no say. "The discussion is over," she says. She says that the government, the military, and companies make the choices. No. Wrong. We the people do not relinquish our rights to choose. Nice try, Christine.
I want to be a data scientist…but…That moment where I have the ability to truly control a persons decision in what they buy…just by the simple clicks and comments they say on the internet…That moment when all (well the high probability of what the human will choose) human choices will be known…What will it really mean to be free? Even when they know…humans will still be willing to give up their data….for convenience..
I’d trust the Chinese over the Americans anyday! America is a hype. Mostly things in that country are very fake. All their tech is stolen from the Europeans, Japanese, Indians, Chinese and Russians. The military (thugs) used nerds to make it. Indian, Russian, Chinese, european, Japanese nerds and a few Americans. But ethically Americans are liars. Hype. Nationalistic and jingoistic. Their only asset is their self belief. Trumps regime exposed that. Imagine we used to believe they were ahead! And maybe they were! But not anymore. This kind of thinking is so 20th century! But it’s good to see history like this all the same.

This lady scares me and I hope she is not representative for most defense executives. She doesn't even understand why drones are controversial after studying such operations for many years? Just shows how oblivious she is.
Imagine that up in the sky there are drones controlled by some person halfway across the world. They fly so high you can't see them but you know they are there. You realize that at any point the operator can decide to end your life. Whether you are a "terrorist" or not, some guy is just doing his daily job, making that call. Have fun going outside.
What about the Chinese? Their companies don't play by the same rules. How do we stop their abuse of AI, now and in the years ahead?
Does anyone have a direct link to the DOD directives she talks about? 🙂
we can't even have a coherent discussion about this unless people are even willing to admit that the military does not protect citizens, which the speaker in the Tedtalk does not. her argument is already compromised and is on weak footing.
the fact of the matter is that something does not have to be "alive" to be sentient just as trees, sea anemones and jellyfish are alive but not sentient.
the military is used to murder civilians so the corporate weapons industry can make profits and still other corporations can make money off of the economic resources in whichever country that's invaded.
you want science and A.I. to have ethical standing? end capitalism.
