World’s largest carbon dioxide sucking factory opens in Iceland – BBC News technology bbc

The world’s largest factory to capture carbon dioxide from the air has begun operations in Iceland. Reducing the amount of CO₂ in the Earth’s atmosphere would help reduce the effects of climate change.

It showcases a developing technology considered by some to be an important tool in the fight against climate change but sceptics question how much impact it can really have.
Is it a futuristic vision of how to save the planet from runaway climate change, or a futile expense that distracts from the urgency of slashing co2 emissions?

According to the companies that constructed the plant, Climeworks and Carbfix, when operating at capacity the plant will draw 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide out of the air every year.

  1. This is a very Expensive solution to an extreme problem…

Honestly, this plant is only good for towns and villages across the world who may or may not have factories which produce CO2. If all that its doing is taking it and cleaning it out and sputting it back then its wayyyyy toooooo slow for the amount that we as a whole planet is producing… might as well just plant some trees and wait till they spread… this is a waste of money and those who r pushing for funding for technology from their Govt are about 20 years late to the environmental game…

In a city like Mumbai, Karachi, Hong Kong, The U.A.E and some middle Eastern Countries who r pumping out oil for the world, and most populated African cities. Just for these alone they will need hundreds if not 1000s of these little factories which is counter productive to what we as humans need to be doing… work smarter not harder ppl…

  2. People don't realize we need carbon dioxide as this is the oxygen for plants, trees, flowers which they emit during the day. Plant clean the air we breath and release clean oxygen during the night so this is scary stuff. Read your biology people! This is NOT GOOD!

  3. There’s no money in ecosystem restoration – which would do a lot to help reduce carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. You can’t patent a wetland, temperate and tropical rainforest, boreal forest, arctic tundra, etc. So don’t think for a second this system is seeking to undo the wrongs over the last 40-50 years (especially) because of a primary concern for humanity and biodiversity on earth. It’s doing it because there is lots of money to be made

  4. It's so expensive because it's new tech, we need to invest in this new tech now while it expensive in anchorage production lines and costs can be reduced in the future. The same thing happened with solar panels.

  5. I've been to Iceland, it's one of the greenest, cleanest, most beautiful places on Earth. Why wouldn't they build a plant in China where the real problem is I wonder?

  6. What a usuless…
Go build nuclear (not in island, usuless) and shut down coal and gaz
The question is how much this must run to suck all the co2 use to build it?

  7. I don't think we should be investing more on capturing CO2 than not letting it out in the first place. And if we can't, Wouldn't it me way efficient to suck the carbon up directly from the factories than thin air, it will save a lot of power and time.

  8. You see the ppl that own the factories is trapped in the demons arms can't do anything about it they goal is to open the world by heating it up to get hell out from underneath and bring hell to the ground

  9. The butthole that said this is a waste of time at the end is clearly in solar powers / windpowers pocket. This is the first generation of something like this and we're gonna need anything we can get. But that ONE guy can shape the minds of millions of people. Twisted media no real answer just be happy that people have created this.
